How Our AI Uses Nub Theory to Predict Your Baby’s Gender

When you upload your baby scan to Baby World, you’re not just getting a 50/50 guess. You’re tapping into our SOTA AI, trained on thousands of real ultrasound images. While some parents ask if we use nub theory, the answer is yes… but that’s only the beginning.

When you upload your baby scan to Baby World, you’re not just getting a 50/50 guess. You’re tapping into our SOTA AI, trained on thousands of real ultrasound images. While some parents ask if we use nub theory, the answer is yes… but that’s only the beginning.

What is Nub Theory?

Nub theory is a popular method used to predict a baby’s gender from an early ultrasound, typically between 12 and 14 weeks, by examining the angle and position of the genital tubercle (also known as the “nub”).

Maya was trained on thousands of ultrasound images. This means the AI doesn’t just know about nub theory. It has learned how to identify and interpret the subtle visual cues that matter most.

Here’s how it works:

  • If the nub is angled upwards at more than 30 degrees from the spine, it’s often taken as a sign the baby is a boy.

  • If the nub is flat or horizontal, in line with the spine, it’s typically interpreted as a girl.

This angle can be subtle and sometimes tricky to judge, even for trained professionals. That’s where AI makes a huge difference and Maya goes beyond traditional nub theory.

The Evolution of Maternal Intelligence

Maya is a Maternal Intelligence Model (MIM), a specialised AI designed to support pregnancy and parenthood.

As more users upload their scans and share their outcomes, Maya continues to learn and improve. Over time, this helps her become even more accurate at interpreting nub theory and making early gender predictions.

While early-stage predictions like nub theory will always carry some margin for error, especially if the scan is cropped or taken a bit too early, we are committed to offering the most accurate AI-powered insights available.

More Than Just Gender Prediction

Maya doesn’t stop after the gender guess.

Whether it’s interpreting your 20-week scan, explaining confusing medical terms, or answering late-night questions about symptoms, Maya is here 24/7. No ads. No generic answers. Just clear, caring support, trained on the reality of modern pregnancy.
